Colonial Archives

The Colonial Archives project facilitates an interdisciplinary examination of the Americas by meticulously analyzing and digitizing historical texts and imagery. This initiative aims to illuminate overlooked historical perspectives, integrating diverse cultural records to enrich our collective understanding of colonial legacies.

Pathway 1: Archive of the manuscripts and Apostolic Processes of St Rose of Lima (1586-1617)

This strand examines early colonial administrative documentation to understand how viceregal bureaucratic frameworks reshaped indigenous societal hierarchies and governance. Through this analysis, the project illuminates the enduring structural consequences of imperial legal and political systems.

Pathway 2: Archive of the Iconography of St Rose of Lima (1586-1617)

This pathway investigates the religious iconography of St Rose of Lima, examining how colonial visual culture functioned as a tool for both spiritual integration and social defiance. By analyzing sacred art, the project deciphers the symbolic language used to navigate and challenge the ecclesiastical landscapes of the Americas.

Pathway 3: Archive of the Apostolic Processes of St Francis Xavier (1506-1552)

This initiative analyzes the extensive primary source documentation and canonization records associated with St Francis Xavier. It aims to contextualize his historical influence through a rigorous study of original apostolic manuscripts.
